What is a Peace Circle?

A Peace Circle:

 

  • is a respectful space where you talk about a misunderstanding or a conflict

  • involves the people that were in the conflict and/or witnesses

  • has a third party facilitator or peacekeeper whose role is to:

    • keep everyone calm

    • guide the discussion

    • and ensure that the acuerdos is being followed

    • *a facilitator/peacekeeper is not always necessary

  • takes place with people sitting in the shape of a circle 

 

 

Goals of a Peace Circle

 

1. To resolve conflicts or misunderstandings

2. To come up with different ways of solving a problem

3. To be able to demand accountability

4. To understand another person's point of view

 

 

Materials in a Circle

(not all of these are used all the time)

 

  • Discipline for Freedom form is used for reflection.

  • Candles are used for setting a calm atmosphere.

  • A talking piece is used to facilitate conversation so people don't talk over each other.

  • Cards with quotes are used to start the conversation.

  • Sage is burned to calm people down with the smell.

  • A centerpiece is created, comprising of different objects, to represent the topic of the piece circle.
